Logistics Guild and Beyond 2030 - Job Club Celebration Event

Beyond 2030 and The Logistics Guild have been working in partnership to help people hone in on the key skills and techniques required to find a job within the logistics sector. On 16th August, Beyond 2030 held an event at the Benn Partnership in Rugby to celebrate the end of this year's 'Job Club' development programme. In attendance were logistics industry employers that supported the programme - including Greggs, DHL and ASDA - as well as representatives from The Logistics Guild, Skills for Logistics and the MP for Rugby, The Rt Hon. Mark Pawsey.
The event, organised by Beyond 2030, in partnership with The Logistics Guild was a celebration of the candidates' success and how far they had come since joining the specialist development programme: many who had lacked confidence at the beginning of the programme can now address a whole room of people about their personal achievements since joining the programme.
The development programme aims to provide a pool of talented, job-ready people with opportunities to find jobs in logistics and was delivered in partnership with the Logistics Guild and Skills for Logistics.
The programme helps the delegates to build confidence and a positive mind-set in addition to developing the skills required by local logistics employers. They work on creating their employment goals and developing CV's and interview skills to ensure they stand out from the crowd. The Job Club also gives access to mentoring, information, support and employment opportunities.
This year's delegates were presented with certificates by the Rt Hon. Mark Pawsey, MP for Rugby; Peter Murphy of the Logistics Guild and Cheryl Simons, Lead Trainer from Beyond 2030. The day also included a team building session, which involved teams thinking about various aspects of the programme including how they felt about their prospects now that the programme is complete.
Motivational speeches were made by Mark Pawsey, Mick Jackson from Greggs and Peter Murphy from the Logistics Guild.
Mark Pawsey was fully supportive of the programme as well as the work of Beyond 2030 and the Logistics Guild and said that he had gained "a good understanding of the value of the training and development programme. Rugby has all the assets - we are in the middle of England and ideal for logistics."
He added: "I will stand up in Parliament to say that logistics is a great contribution to the economy and significant for my constituency." Commenting on The Logistics Guild, Peter Murphy said: "We are creating a modern Logistics Guild for the sector that can apply joined up thinking and use our contacts and companies to link to talent. Our mission is to help the logistics industry recruit better people. We already have in excess of 26,000 members who include logistics apprentices, soldiers, sailors and airmen.
He added: "Logistics Guild Recruitment Services, in partnership with the Logistics Job Shop, is talking to Yodel, amongst others, for job vacancies and temporary vacancies particularly around the Christmas delivery peak." One of the successful participants on the training and development programme, Beth Harbourne, is planning to start her own business, as well as volunteering with Beyond 2030 for the next programme.
"Before I got involved I was out of work for a long time - I had no confidence," she said. "Now look at me! Being involved has given me the boost I need to get out there and find a job I want to do. I plan on taking a Maths and English course in September, as I know this will help boost my chances. I feel like I'm ready to take on the world."
Beth's personal journey and confidence was broadly indicative of the success generated by Job Club development programme. A number of the course participants were proud to stand up at the Celebration Event and explain the difference the course had made to them in a relatively short period of time. For some participants, after long periods of unemployment and frustration, the personal changes were dramatic and immediate with job offers being received and accepted.
Linzi Tarrant was also one of these individuals. As a result of her involvement with the Job Club she has been able to secure a job as a class 2 driver for DHL. She said; "When I first started the programme I knew I had the skill - I just had lost all my confidence. Chatting to the others made me feel a lot better because I knew I wasn't the only one. The job club has changed the way I think about employment and I'm now really excited about my new job, it's opened a lot of doors for me already because I'm planning on getting my own place to live."
