NYK Sites Achieve Environmental Accreditation

Following an intensive four month internal analysis and audit process, NYK Logistics (UK) Ltd has successfully achieved independent ISO 14001-2004 (ISO 14001) environmental certification at its flagship Grange Park distribution complex in Northampton.

ISO 14001 is the internationally recognised standard for the environmental management of businesses which prescribes controls for those activities that have an effect on the environment, including the use of natural resources, handling and treatment of waste and energy consumption.

The three NYK sites at Grange Park were assessed by independent accreditation body, BSI in January. With the average time from initial implementation to ISO 14001 accreditation being 12 months, the auditors were particularly impressed by the short time in which NYK completed the process and by the level of awareness of the companys environmental management systems, achieved through the use of visual communication materials and regular briefings with staff at all levels.

In recognition of NYKs achievement, Mike Bernon, Senior Lecturer within the Centre for Logistics and Supply Chain Management at Cranfield School of Management, presented the IS014001 certificate to NYKs implementation team headed by Group Quality and Environmental Manager Darral Beresford.

Mike, who advises companies on their sustainability performance and carbon footprint measurement, commented: Logistics providers need to take the lead in ensuring the highest standards throughout the supply chain and I applaud NYK Logistics for this indication of their commitment.

NYKs MD Operations, Paul Kavanagh said: As a responsible business, NYK recognises the need to understand and mitigate the effects of its activities on the environment and the accreditation of our environmental management systems to ISO 14001 simply underlines this.

ISO 14001 is also something which our existing and prospective customers are increasingly demanding from their suppliers and which few of our competitors can currently boast. This, combined with the potential for cost savings resulting from better waste and energy management, also makes a compelling commercial case for the implementation of ISO14001.

Using Grange Park as a blueprint, NYK will roll out Environmental Management Standard ISO14001 to all 40 UK sites in the next two years.
